A partir de la fin des années 1870, se développe dans le Haut-Jura, une industrie diamantaire qui donne du travail à plusieurs centaines d'ouvriers. Pourtant la taille du diamant y était jusqu'alors inconnue. Pourquoi cette industrie s'est-elle précisément implantée sur ce territoire ? Ce livre montre qu'à cette époque un district industriel s'est développé autour de Saint-Claude. Des pierres précieuses y sont façonnées ; différents objets en bois, les "articles de Saint-Claude", et des pipes de bruyère y sont fabriqués.
La formation de ce district industriel a donné à ce territoire des avantages compétitifs propices à l'introduction d'une nouvelle activité. Ce sont eux qui permettent aux Jurassiens de se faire une place dans le monde du diamant. En effet, entre 1870 et la première guerre mondiale, l'industrie diamantaire est déjà pleinement mondialisée. Les entreprises diamantaires du Haut-Jura, dans leur très grande majorité, sont les sous-traitantes de maisons de négoce implantées à Londres, Anvers, Amsterdam et Paris.
Celles-ci expédient à Saint-Claude des lots de diamants extraits principalement en Afrique du Sud pour les faire tailler. Elles les commercialisent ensuite essentiellement à Birmingham où l'industrie de la bijouterie est alors en plein essor. L'étude de l'industrie diamantaire du XIXe siècle apporte donc une contribution intéressante à l'histoire de la mondialisation de l'économie ainsi qu'à celle des districts industriels.
