El tren de las 3:10 a Yuma fue llevado al cine en 1957 por Delmer Daves, con Glenn Ford como protagonista, y en 2007por James Mangold, con Russell Crowe. Con treinta y siete novelas, veinte de ellas llevadas al cine o la televisión,Elmore Leonard, nacido en Nueva Orleans en 1925, se encuentra entre los autores más relevantes de la narrativa de género negro contemporánea.Menos conocida para el lector europeo es su faceta como escritor de western, género con el que debutó en 1953 con la novela The Bounty Hunters,y que siguió cultivando con siete novelas más y multitud de relatos. De los treinta relatos western que escribió Leonard, la gran mayoría entre1951 y 1956, el presente volumen reúne los quince primeros. Muchas de estas historias, como “El rastro de los apaches”, “Infierno en el Cañón delDiablo”, “La mujer del coronel” o “Botas de caballería”, se desarrollan en el inhóspito paisaje de Arizona entre 1870 y 1890, y tienen como protagonistasa los apaches y a la caballería americana. Pero en los relatos de Leonard, además de estas historias sobre exploradores indios, soldados ybandidos, encontramos otras centradas en la vida y problemas de rancheros, sheriffs, cazadores de búfalos, chicas, mineros o vagabundos.
